Arrow_left - Diffusion and Osmosis
Error Browser inconsistencies often create problems. Make sure to print a test page to make sure everything works. You can do this by setting the pages in the Page Range to 1.
1. Click Here to print these flashcards.
2. Fold each page in half (horizontally).
3. Cut below each flash card.
4. Use tape, glue, or staples to hold the flashcards together.
This will print 2 pages.
4 flashcards per page.
Selectively Permeable Membrane
A membrane that allows some, but not all substances to pass through.
Diffusion
The spreading out of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Diffusion
The spreading out of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of lower concentration through a partially permeable membrane
Turgor Pressure
The pressure of the cytoplasm and vacuole against the cell wall of a plant.
Plasmolysis
The loss of water from the cytoplasm and the movement of the cell membrane away from the cell wall
Examples of Osmosis
Animal cells; same concentration means cytoplasm stays the came size Less concentrated means the solution gains water, swell and may burst. High concentration lose water, shrivel and may die.
Amoeba
Has a contractile vacuole so it survives in a less concentrated solution
