Allegiance: Loyalty to a group, nation, religion, sports team or government. For example: Mrs. Keay has a an allegiance to Canada.
Myths: Stories about religion, Society or history that gives us something to believe in. For example : Louis Riel.
Civic Identity/ Civic Nation: Collective identity of a political society, shared laws, ideology, territory and government.
Identity: How you describe yourself in terms of attire, body adornments , collectives, religion, and traditions.
Pluralism: A country (nation-state) that is diverse. For example : Canada.
Peacekeeper: Created by Canadian Prime Minister Lester B Pearson (1950) to assist the United Nations (UN) in maintaining world peace. Peacekeepers are unarmed, now armed and called Peacemakers.
Ethnic: Cultural background, race, tradition, and religion.
Self-Determination: Independence of a nation. The ability of a nation to make their own decisions about laws, public services, education, and health care.
Xenophobia: Fear of other nations or cultures.
Racism: Hate/Violence toward a race, culture or ethnicity.
Patriotism: A strong sense of loyalty, nationalism or pride in your nation.
International: Involving two or more nations.
Nation-State: A sovereign (independent) nation. For example : Canada or Vatican City.
Heritage: The past or your past. Your personal history.
Multiculturism: A country or nation-state that accepts and celebrates cultural diversity. Example : Canada.
Ultranationalism: An extreme form of nationalism. Citizens are willing to eliminate anyone considered inferior or undesirable. For example: Nazi Germany or the KKK.
Quebecois: A francophone living in Quebec that believes that Quebec has a distinct language and culture. Usually approves of separatism.
Oka Crisis: (1990) A land dispute between the Mohawk people and town of Oka. It led to martial law in Quebec and a violet standoff.
Conscientious Objection: An informed decision someone makes not to serve in the armed forces. Based on religious or political beliefs.
Regionalism: The feeling that in Canada, one region (Prairies, Atlantic, Central, North) is more superior than another.
Meech Lake Accord: (1981, under PM Mulroney) A series of proposed amendments to the constitution top officially declare Quebec a distinct society. Never ratified.
Burqa/Niqab: A headscarf that also covers the entire face (burqa) or leave eyes visible (niqab). Worn by Islamic women for cultural and religious purposes.
Hijab: A headscarf worn by Islamic women for cultural and religious purposes.
Perspective: How someone views and issue.
Referendum: When an issue is too great for own MPs to decide, they hold a nationwide vote on the issue. Citizens decide the outcome. This is a form of direct democracy. In 1994, there was a referendum to decide if Quebec should separate from Canada.
Bloc Quebecois: The official separatist party of Quebec. Has been the official opposition a few times.
Reconciliation: To fix or make right.

Absolute Monarchy: A type of government with a hereditary King or Queen. The belief that the monarch is chosen by God, which justifies their total, unlimited rule. For example: Louis XVI
