Popular Sovereignty: reflects their will, people rule, gov. authority comes from the people
Republicanism: people elect representatives to make laws and exercise the power of government
Federalism: states in the nation become our partners. requires both strong central and local governments.
Delegated/Enumerated: powers to the national government
Concurrent: shared powers
Reserved: powers for the state governments
Separation of Powers: concerned that too much power might fall into the hands of a single group. pitted the branches of government against one another to create a separation of powers. Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary
Checks and Balances: makes sure branches work together fairly. each branch of government can exercise checks, or controls, over the other branches.
Limited Government: restricted power of government. everyone must obey the law. individuals cannot twist or bypass the law to serve their interests.
Individual Rights: shields people from overly powerful government. called Bill of Rights. first ten amendments to the constitution. guarantees certain rights, or personal liberties and privileges.
Supreme Law: The constitution and the laws of the U.S. are above all laws. state laws, treaties and judges are bound to the constitution.
Flexibility: ability to change. amendments may be added. Elastic Clause: make laws that are necessary & proper in order for the Federal government to do its job
