science: A particular discipline or branch of learning, especially one dealing with measurable or systematic principles rather than intuition or natural ability. [from 14th c.]

observation: The act of observing, and the fact of being observed.

inference: The act or process of inferring by deduction or induction.

hypothesis: A tentative conjecture explaining an observation, phenomenon or scientific problem that can be tested by further observation, investigation and/or experimentation.

controlled experiment: controlled variable

independent variable: In an equation, any variable whose value is not dependent on any other in the equation.

dependent variable: In an equation, the variable whose value depends on one or more variables in the equation.

control group: The group of test subjects left untreated or unexposed to some procedure and then compared with treated subjects in order to validate the results of the test.

homeostasis: The ability of a system or living organism to adjust its internal environment to maintain a stable equilibrium; such as the ability of warm-blooded animals to maintain a constant temperature.

metometabolism: break down food

biosphere: the part of the Earth and its atmosphere capable of supporting life

theory: An expectation of what should happen, barring unforeseen circumstances.

bias: In the game of crown green bowlsa weight added to one side of a bowl so that as it rolls, it will follow a curved rather than a straight path; the oblique line followed by such a bowl; the lopsided shape or structure of such a bowl.
