Limited government: One person does not have all the power
Bicameral legislature: Two houses of legislative branch
Petition of Right: A constitutional document passed on 1628. Parliament forced Charles I to sign it. Limited power of the monarch and Parliament (elected by the people) had more power.
English Bill of Rights: Citizens rights from government violations.
Charter: English monarchs gave settlers right to establish a colony. Most charters included a limited and representative government.
Electoral college: A body of electors from the executive branch to elect someone to a particular office.
Federalist Party: A U.S. political party founded in 1787 by Alexander Hamilton. Federalists believed the Constitution would protect rights and was necessary to hold the nation together.
Anti-Federalists: A group of people who opposed federalism. They did not want the new government. They believed the constitution would create a government that would threaten people's rights and state's rights.
