Militarism: an ideology which claims that the military is the foundation of a society's security, and thereby claims to be its most important aspect

Alliance: The state of being allied; the act of allying or uniting; a union or connection of interests between families, states, parties, etc., especially between families by marriage and states by compact, treaty, or league; as, matrimonial alliances; an alliance

Triple Alliance: An alliance formed with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Eventually forming into the Central Powers.

Triple Entente: Alliance formed between Russia, France, and Great Britain. Eventually became thew Allies.

Imperialism: The policy of forcefully extending a nation's authority by territorial gain or by the establishment of economic and political dominance over other nations.

Nationalism: Supporting a national identity when it does not exist as a sovereign nation, for example, Basque nationalism, Kurdish nationalism.

Archduke Ferdinand: Archduke of Austria-Hungary. While on tour in Serbia he was assassinated by Serbian militants. The First World War began as a result.

Neutral: Not taking sides in a conflict such as war; nonaligned.

Woodrow Wilson: President of the U.S. during the First World War.

Propaganda: A concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people.

U-boat: Any German submarine of the First or Second World War, or any Austro-Hungarian submarine of the First World War.

Lusitania: An Allied passenger ship sunk by a German U-Boat during World War I

Zimmerman Note: Sent to Mexico to gain them as Allies for the First World War.

Trench Warfare: Warfare in which opposing sides occupy trenches; usually very bloody, miserable, and endless.

Stationary: Not moving.

Casualty: Something that happens by chance, especially an unfortunate event; an accident, a disaster.

Selective Service Act of 1917: Instituted the draft.

War Bonds: Bonds that when purchased raised money for the governmental during times of war.

War Industry Board: Formed to make war time decisions at home.

Mobilize: To assemble troops and their equipment in a coordinated fashion so as to be ready for war.

The Big Four: President Wilson, David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau and Vittorio Orlando met to decide what would happen after World War I

Versailles Treaty: the agreement made after World War I that was very harsh to Germany

Reparations: Payments for war-time destruction.

League of Nations: An international organization founded as a result of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the First World War. Its goals included disarmament, preventing war through collective security, settling disputes between countries through negotiation, diplomacy
